Mission
The purpose of the Reno & District Firefighters Pipe Band is to
promote and advance the culture surrounding the practice of
traditional Scottish piping and drumming. This is
specifically achieved through active competition that provides
players with the opportunity to improve and judge their own
artistic development. By exposing young people to the art
and mastery of piping and drumming and promoting an environment
of learning directly from established piping and drumming
masters, this important form of cultural expression is
preserved for and maintained by future generations.
Project Description
Based on a quick rise in notoriety and an established capacity
to compete effectively, the Reno & District Firefighters Pipe
Band will now compete regionally with among the very best
bands. Based on music presentation and
competition results in the Western United States Pipe Band
Association, pipe bands are divided into competition
levels starting with Grade 4 and later move through Grades 3 and
2, and finally into the Top Class Grade 1. The opportunity
of placing in any such divisions has significant long-term
benefits to the Band’s development and prestige.
International recognition helps present Reno with even more
cultural distinction, promotes business and sponsorship for the
Band and stimulates interest among talented players to join up
with the group, thus further building it’s foundation.
Each band member travels and
participates in competition within the capacity their personal
resources will allow. Though each band member already
contributes a significant amount of their time, personal funding
and energy preparing for and traveling to competition sites,
personal costs to compete regionally run as high as $2,950 for
a weekend.
Added sponsorship support is crucial for the Band to achieve its goal of representing 22 players in Glasgow. Local area competition travel can also be demanding, but represents a significant training opportunity while providing important visibility for the Band and the Reno community. Uniforms, maintenance costs, selected instrument acquisitions and associated equipment purchases round out the overhead necessary to support this all-volunteer operation, amounting to another $2,614 per person annually.
